Wisconsin’s jazz community is mourning the loss of Jack Grassel, the acclaimed guitarist, composer, educator, and performer whose decades-long career influenced audiences, students, and fellow musicians throughout Racine, Milwaukee, and beyond. Grassel died at 77 on August 26, 2026, following a devastating head-on collision in Caledonia, Wisconsin.
Grassel was remembered not only for his exceptional musicianship but also for his dedication to teaching, performing, composing, and sharing his love of jazz. His connections to Mount Pleasant, Racine, and Milwaukee made him a respected and familiar figure within Wisconsin’s musical community.
Reports indicate that Grassel was involved in a collision after his vehicle crossed the centerline and struck another car. The 83-year-old driver of the other vehicle also died. Grassel’s wife and longtime musical partner, vocalist Jill Jensen, later said he had suffered a fatal medical event and was unconscious before the crash.
His death is particularly poignant following his recovery from a stroke in January 2025. Despite that setback, Grassel worked toward recovery and eventually returned to the stage with Jensen. Just two weeks before his death, the couple performed together in what became their final public appearance.
