The anime industry is mourning the loss of Yuji Yanase, a respected director and animator who passed away at the age of 59 following a heart attack.
His death was confirmed by MAHO FILM president Junji Murata. Yanase reportedly died on August 22, 2026, and a private funeral has already been held by his family.
Yanase built a career spanning more than three decades, beginning in the mid-1990s. He first gained recognition as an animation director on projects such as Saber Marionette J and Mashin Hero Wataru, before contributing to Shaman King.
He later transitioned into directing, working on titles including Noein and My Bride Is a Mermaid. In recent years, he became closely associated with MAHO FILM, directing projects such as The World’s Strongest Rearguard and The Insipid Prince’s Furtive Grab for the Throne during the 2026 season.
Colleagues and production teams paid tribute to Yanase, remembering him for his warm personality, leadership, and passion for animation. His work and mentorship left a lasting impact on both the projects he led and the people he worked with.
