FORT KNOX, Ky. — A soldier who died after equipment fell on him at Fort Knox in Kentucky has been identified. Military officials said it was Staff Sgt. Deonte Lamar Davis, of Daytona Beach, Florida. He was assigned to the 19th Engineer Battalion, 20th Engineer Brigade, XVIII Airborne Corps. They said he was a bridge crewmember assigned to Fort Knox since 2024. His awards include the Army Commendation Medal, two Army Achievement Medals, two Army Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and Overseas Service Ribbon.
The U.S. Army said engineering equipment fell on him Tuesday while he was working in the motor pool. He was flown to a hospital in Louisville, where he died. “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Staff Sgt. Davis,” said Col. Jeff Burges, commander of the 20th Engineer Brigade. “He was an outstanding Soldier and leader, and will be deeply missed by all his family, friends and fellow soldiers across the formation.”
What happened is still under investigation by the Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division as part of the Army’s standard process for investigating Soldier fatalities.
