Manchester-based soul musician Mica Millar is gaining widespread attention following the release of her debut album Heaven Knows, a project shaped by resilience, independence, and artistic vision.
Millar, an independent artist, wrote, arranged, and produced the album herself under her own label, Golden Hour Music. Her journey to completing the project spanned over three years and was marked by significant personal challenges, including a serious spinal injury that required her to relearn how to walk.
Born into a musically inclined family, Millar was surrounded by music from a young age. Her father was a songwriter, and her mother worked in public relations for EMI and Piccadilly Radio in Manchester. This environment exposed her to a rich collection of soul records and live performances, which played a major role in shaping her musical direction.
Despite early struggles with vocal control, she developed her voice through songwriting, spending hours practicing and refining her craft. Over time, this dedication transformed her into a powerful and expressive vocalist.
Heaven Knows reflects themes of spirituality, love, empowerment, oppression, and human nature. The album blends vintage influences from soul, blues, gospel, and jazz, while staying true to her independent artistic identity rather than following industry trends.
